Methodology

ERMI vs EMMA vs HERTSMI-2

ERMI (Environmental Relative Moldiness Index) was developed by the EPA. It measures 36 species of mold in household dust via DNA analysis. Most comprehensive picture, and the standard for pre-remediation assessment.

HERTSMI-2 is a subset of ERMI focused on the five species most associated with chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS). Faster, cheaper, but not a full picture.

EMMA adds mycotoxin testing to ERMI-style DNA analysis. Useful when symptoms persist despite a "clean" ERMI.

Air samples and surface swabs test for visible or localized contamination. DNA methods test for everything that has ever grown — hidden or remediated.
